Subject:RE: risk assessment tools for assessing abuse and neglect

Several good articles have been published on safety and risk assessment this year. Those include: --Bolton, Annalese; Lennings, Chris. "Clinical opinions of structured risk assessments for forensic child protection: The development of a clinically relevant device". Children & Youth Services Review, Oct2010, Vol. 32 Issue 10, p1300-1310. --Jessica M.; Schwalbe, Craig. "The timing to and risk factors associated with child welfare system recidivism at two decision-making points". Children & Youth Services Review, Jul2010, Vol. 32 Issue 7, p1035-1044. --Graham, J. Christopher; Stepura, Kelly; Baumann, Donald J.; Kern, Homer. "Predicting child fatalities among less-severe CPS investigations". Children & Youth Services Review, Feb2010, Vol. 32 Issue 2, p274-280. --Munro, Eileen. "Conflating risks: Implications for accurate risk prediction in child welfare services". Health, Risk & Society, Apr2010, Vol. 12 Issue 2, p119-130. Slides from a presentation on risk assessment in child welfare by Aron Shlonsky in July 2010 are available online at: http://www.uwcita.org/CITAv1008/trainingmaterials/Risk%20Assessment/Risk_FR_Shlonsky2.ppt.pdf The slides provide a good overview of the subject, including a clear explanation of the conceptual distinction between safety and risk. The Children's Research Center outlines their approach to safety and risk assessment, and offers examples of several of their instruments, at: http://www.nccd-crc.org/crc/crc/pdf/2008_sdm_book.pdf From: bounce-6372391-12200436@list.cornell.edu [mailto:bounce-6372391-12200436@list.cornell.edu] On Behalf Of Cindy.Currell@notes.udayton.edu Sent: Tuesday, September 28, 2010 11:22 AM To: child-maltreatment-research-L@cornell.edu Subject: risk assessment tools for assessing abuse and neglect Hello, I'm looking for tools and current thoughts on risk assessment that I can share with undergraduate students in my child abuse course - as we study the varied ways state laws define child maltreatment and how in practice we assess abuse and neglect of children in child welfare. Thank you for any assistance or references you would suggest. Sincerely, Cindy Currell, MSW, LISW-S University of Dayton
