This summer the Institute for the
Advancement of Social Work Research (IASWR) will be hosting a workshop titled,
“Enhancing Rigor In Qualitative Research: An In-depth Introduction to Grounded
Theory and Focused Ethnography.” This IASWR summer workshop is targeted toward
doctoral students, junior faculty and other researchers interested in advancing
their knowledge and skills in qualitative methods. Emphasis will be placed upon
enhancing rigor in two of the most widely used approaches (i.e., Focused
Ethnography and Grounded Theory). it is offered to present a unique opportunity
for participants to learn about qualitative methods, engage in interactive
learning, be exposed to the use of ATLAS. ti software, and network with one
another. The workshop will cover epistemological issues, data collection, data
analysis and report writing. Opportunities will be structured for building
relationships with peers that can form the basis for consultation and support
through e-mail and listserv communications after the workshop ends. The format
will combine lectures with hands-on exercises and group discussion.
