published since Hollingshead, which is based on work done in the 1940's.
One of them was validated cross nationally. I can't remember
the author. There is an entire book on it. It is probably
called the International Occupational Prestige scale. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";
color:#1F497D'>Fortunately, measurement of SES is very robust. The
most frequent practice in sociology research is now to just z score the education,
income and occupation variables (to make them contribute equally) and sum the z
scores. I also usually z score the sum. In my
opinion, for most purposes it is not worth the trouble to do detailed
occupational coding. I found that an SES scale that just scored the
occupation as blue collar (i.e. manual work) compared to white collar (cognitive
work) produces a scale that works just as well as one in which I invested a
large amount of time doing occupational prestige coding. However, I
did that 30 years ago. Things may have changed.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

stratification per se, the main advantage of using a detailed occupational
prestige scale is the cachet associated with being able to say that and cite
something. I suggest you consult with whoever teaches social
stratification in the soc department and look through a couple of
textbooks on social stratification which you can borrow from that person (libraries
do not usually buy textbooks).<o:p></o:p></span></p>

Hollingshead Index for coding SES using occupation, education, and

any updates, but there have been many new occupations since then (e.g., in
