Re: Research on physical abuse

I recommend Mark Fraser's edited volume, "Risk and Resilience in Childhood"
(Washington, DC: NASW Press, 1997), especially the chapter by Barbara
Thomlinson on "Risk and Protective Factors in Child Maltreatment." Emmy
Werner's (old) study of children in Hawaii is also relevant; I think her
book on this study is titled "Vulnerable but Invincible".

There is a large but very disjointed literature on group and individual
interventions with children. This covers peer support groups, play therapy,
individual and group therapy, and other school- and community-based mental
health services. Here, you're wading into a pool that is both broad and deep.

Helpful resources on the developmental consequences and treatment of child
abuse include:

John N. Briere. (1992). Child Abuse Trauma: Theory and Treatment of the
Lasting Effects. Newbury Park, CA: Sage Publications.

Dante Cicchetti and Vickie Carlson (eds.). (1989). Child maltreatment:
Theory and Research on the Causes and Consequences of Child Abuse and
Neglect. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press.

Raymond H. Starr, Jr. and David A. Wolfe (1991). The Effects of Child Abuse
and Neglect: Issues and Research. London/New York: The Guilford Press.

Good Luck!
