Re: Initial mental health screening

The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire is a 25-item measure that
correlates well with the much longer Child Behavior Checklist. It can
be found at www.sdqinfo.com.

The authority's specialist health advisor asks if there is a reliable
short version assessment tool to undertake initial screens for
possible
mental health issues in children and young people in care?

A government study (2002) of the mental health of young people looked
after by local authorities in England found that 45% were assessed as
having a mental disorder: 37% had clinically significant conduct
disorders; 12% were assessed as having emotional disorders – anxiety

and
depression – and 7% were rated as hyperactive.

My colleague would like to identify possible problems early on in
order
to refer to appropriate services. A quick but reliable screening -
does
one exist?
