Doctoral or Masters level student wanted to conduct an in-depth cost
benefit analysis on the implementation of the Sanctuary Model -- a system
wide approach to trauma treatment.

The Sanctuary Model is a whole systems approach to organizational change.
Sanctuary seeks to create a safe environment where a child can express
their feelings and develop skills necessary to focus on their future and
move past the trauma and loss they have experienced. An
important part of Sanctuary is for the agency to change the culture of
care at every level to emphasize a non-violent approach, emotional
intelligence, inquiry and social learning, shared governance, open
communication, social responsibility ad personal growth and
change.

After using the Sanctuary Model for several years organizations have
identified a marked decrease in the number of physical restraints,
critical incidents and direct care staff turnover. The goal of this
project is to use a select number of agencies who have been using the
Sanctuary Model for a minimum of two years, and identify the cost savings
associated with the reductions in physical restraints, critical incidents
and direct care staff turnover.

The intern is expected to design the methodology for the analysis, travel
to organizations (travel may be within New York State, or to
Pennsylvania, Oklahoma or Nebraska), collect necessary data, conduct
analysis and prepare final report. Intern must be extremely well
versed in cost benefit analysis.

The internship runs from June 2, 2008 through August 15, 2008 (dates are
flexible). A stipend will be paid for this research. All travel expenses
will be paid for data collection.

The Andrus Children's Center is an 80 year old private, non-profit
community agency that provides assessment, treatment, education and
preventive services for children and their families in residential and
day treatment programs. Through our Andrus Center for Learning and
Innovation -the teaching and learning arm of the organization - we offer
the Sanctuary Institute a professional training program for organizations
interested in using the Sanctuary Model to improve their organizational
cultures.
