Dear colleagues,

I'm looking for data about criteria in selection of potential adoptive parents.
Here in Italy, the law states that they must have a psychological and physical
fitness (idoneità fisica e psichica) to the adoption, but the criteria for
"physical fitness" have never been clarified, and there is the wildest possible
variety of approaches, many courts are satisfied with a statement by their
family doctor about their good health. The most difficult point crux is
represented by persons with major chronic diseases, such as diabetes, or renal
failure and who are under dialysis, SLE (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus), who are
at the present moment quite well compensated, but whose potential negative
outcomes (worsening of their medical conditions, death) may happen at any
time.

I'm actually dealing - as expert nominated by a Court of
Appeal - with one of such cases, and I would like to know if there are protocols
in the field, and - above all - if there are researches about the effects upon
the adoptees of living with an adoptive parent who - since the beginning of
the adoption - is also chronically ill.
