I am a parent advocate. Question I have is
this: when parenting assessments are conducted that are based on observations of
parent-child interaction, how is the assessment process affected by whether the
parent and child are currently living together vs. interaction of parent and
child when child has been removed? E.g. supervised visitation is often used as
an assessment opportunity, particularly in early stages of the child's removal
from home--often with legal proceedings still pending for the family. I
know the topic was initiated with regard to foster care providers but the
responses seem to refer to a range of parenting assessments including those used
for natural parents.

There is an interesting paper that deals with the fact
that visitation for children in care involves different agendas for parent and
professional--e.g. the parent focused on the opportunity for parent-child
intimacy, the professional focused on issues such as the parent's
ability to discipline--and how these different agendas are often not
acknowledged and can undermine the visitation process altogether.

Second question: personal observations (I have a son with
multiple psychiatric diagnoses) have been that when emotional/behavioral
checklists are used, school teachers are more likely to identify externalizing
factors and parents (including foster parents) are more likely to identify
internalizing factors. Is anyone aware of research into this phenomenon? I
realize that different checklists are usually used for parents than for
teachers, so I would think the design would control for this general difference
in perceptions of a child's emotions and behavior. I have seen this happen with
different types of checklist-type instruments.
