Dear Todd,

I work in the area of drug court evaluation, but
mostly have focused on adult and juvenile drug courts. For adult criminal
drug courts there appears to be an emerging consensus that these courts do
reduce criminal recidivism compared to traditional adjudication. However,
the research on family drug courts is much more limited, and although I'm not
current with that literature, I suspect there still is not solid evidence on the
effectiveness of these courts, particularly with respect to dependency
outcomes. For the one dependency drug court we have evaluated there was
mixed results: Although there were significantly fewer TPR's over an
18-month period for the drug court parents, there were also significantly more
open, unresolved cases at 18 months. A good place to find more
information about drug court evaluation is the publication the
Drug Court Review, published by the National Drug Court Institute www.ndci.org . I know there was a
national multi-site study of dependency drug courts being planned as of a couple
of years ago--perhaps others on the list know what became of that?
