RE: Foster Care

There is a nice chapter in a 2005 book entitled Psychological Issues in
Adoption edited by Brodzinsky et al by Jill Hodges and colleagues...the
chapter is entitled "Change and continuity in mental representations of
attachment after adoption."

I would be wary of any source that says the "ability to form
attachments" is limited by foster placement, especially positive foster
placements...Bowlby might have argued that the reverse is more likely
(eg., secure attachment in one setting makes it more likely that secure
attachment with another caregiver would follow)...this does not mean
that disrupting a secure attachment is not painful for all involved,
however.

Bonnie,

I'm currently beginning to write a court report about exactly your
question and would love it if you would share any responses. I'm happy
to share any research I should come across as well.

I am new to the group and hope my questions are appropriate for its
purposes. I am an MSW student at Boston University. I am interested in
the
following question.

Is there any research that has studied the ability of foster children to

form attachments with adoptive parents if healthy attachments with
long-term foster parents/families are severed?

thank you,
Bonnie Ciambotti
