There appears, anecdotally, to be an increasing tendency in some parts of the UK for children who cannot live safely at home to be placed within the extended family. Part of this is policy driven, from the perspective of maintaining the children within the family; increasingly however it appears to be the consequence of declining resources - both to finance the eplacements and of substitute family carers. Social workers undertaking post qualifying education are concerned that some of these placements are inappropriate but are anxious to be able to argue from theory, rather than what they acknowledge to be a largely intuitive basis. I would be glad to hear from anyone with sources of literature, research etc. Anne Hollows Principal Lecturer in Social Work School of Health and Community Studies Sheffield Hallam University Collgiate Crescent Campus Sheffield S10 2BA tel +44 (0) 114 225 2369 fax+44 (0) 114 225 2430
