class=345061216-20122005>The pattern of the data is
suggesting that structured, sexual-behavior focused treatment that are
cognitive behavioral in orientation and included a strong family/relationshiop
component is more effective than unstructured supportive or play therapy
approaches. We just presented at the last ATSA conference our 10 year
follow up data on children who participated in Bonner, Walker, and Berliner's
randomized trial (see below for reference) with a clinic comparison group
(no known sexual behavior problems, referred for other disruptive behaviors
such as adhd) - we examined sexual offense arrests and child welfare
sexual abuse reports and found that the children randomized to the CBT group
had significantly lower rates of future sexual offenses (2%) than those
in the play therapy group (10%) and were similar to the clinic comparison
group (3%). These results are consistent with the results from
Cohen, Mannarion, Stauffer, Deblinger, and Friedrich's research looking at
treatment of sexually abused children - finding that sexual behavior problems
reduced with CBT with strong family component treatments - better than
unstructured therapy or time (wait period). We have found similar pattern
with preschool children with sexual behavior problems. Manuscripts on
the 10 year follow up and on the preschool treatment outcome study will
hopefully be published next year. --- also look out for the ATSA Task
Force on Children with Sexual Behavior Problems report which will review and
address these issues and a book by the Bill Friedrich to be published next
year.

I am a graduate student currently researching programs that
specialize in providing treatment for children under the age of 11
who present with sexualized behaviors. If anyone has any
knowledge of any programs, articles that speak to current trends in treating
sexualized behaviors or specialized treatment modalities I would
greatly appreciate it.
