Query: treatment for children who have been sexually abused
I am hoping that someone might be able to point me towards some good
articles regarding outcomes for sexually abused children who have
received therapy vs. those who haven't.
I am a student currently working at the Juvenile Rights Division of
Legal Aid in New York. One of the attorneys with whom I'm working
currently has several clients (siblings) who disclosed that they
had been sexually abused. The court ordered that the local DSS
(ACS, in NYC) get the children into therapy, but several months
later the children were still not in therapy. We expect the court
to hold ACS in contempt, and we would like ACS to pay damages to
the children. In order for this to happen, we need to demonstrate
that the children were harmed by not receiving therapy. The
hearing is later this week and I am hoping to find some research
that at least suggests that children who disclose sexaul abuse
should be placed in therapy.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. You can e-mail me directly
at erp2108@columbia.edu.
