JOB POSTING: SENIOR RESEARCH ASSOCIATE IN JUVENILE JUSTICE AND YOUTH
SERVICES
RESPONSIBILITIES
Working with Vera's research director and as part of an inter-disciplinary
team, the senior research associate will be responsible for studies relating
to an array of issues impacting youth, including juvenile justice and
delinquency, juvenile detention, and child welfare. Vera currently has
research projects dealing with status offenders, adolescent reentry, and
juvenile recidivism and is developing projects addressing foster care. The
senior research associate will be responsible for work in all phases of
ongoing and continuing research including: developing research ideas in the
area of juvenile justice and youth services, crafting proposals, managing
mid-level and junior staff to implement research projects, writing reports,
and presenting results to government officials and professional colleagues.
QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants should have a strong track record of social science research and
project management, preferably in applied research though those with
academic experience are strongly encouraged to apply. A doctoral degree in a
social science discipline or equivalent experience is preferred, but strong
skills, a concern for justice and public policy, and an ability to work
collaboratively with Vera staff and external partners are also important.
Preference will be given to applicants with:
* Experience conducting applied research on juvenile justice and youth
services
* Strong social science research design and methodological skills
* Excellent writing skills
* Track record of successful grant writing and entrepreneurship
* Experience managing research teams and working with government or
nonprofits

that often grow into self-sustaining organizations, studies social problems
and current responses, and provides practical advice and assistance to
government officials in New York, nationally, and around the world.
The Research Department plays a vital role in the Institute's activities by
conducting original research on issues of criminal and social justice,
evaluating programs-including Vera demonstration projects-and providing
other Vera staff with research-based knowledge and methodologically
expertise.
