RE: Resources on Reunification

Dear Michael,

You may already be familiar with this Chapin Hall study from 2001, but
it contains some of the most recent data on reunification decisions
under ASFA. The study is: Assessing the Context of Permanency and
Reunification in the Foster Care System. It can be accessed online at:
http://aspe.hhs.gov/hsp/fostercare-reunif01/index.htm. Chapter 7 on
caseworker decision-making might be of particular interest.

Also, this article from the University of Illinois deals with the
perspectives of caseworkers, substance abuse workers, and judges re:
reunification when AOD use is involved:

Smith, B.D. (2003) How parental drug use and drug treatment compliance
relate to family reunification. Child Welfare, LXXII(3), 335-365.

I just completed data collection for a qualitative study of caseworker
and judge decision-making in Oklahoma. I would be happy to help further
if you'd like to contact me off the list.
Best,
Stephanie Bryson

Hey Steve;
We're doing a session at our upcoming annual Foster Care Review Board
Annual conference on the decision point and issues involved in making
the decision to reunify children in foster care with their parents. We
will have a panel (judge, attys for children and parents, mental health
provider, foster care worker) -- all of whom will share considerations
from their perspective. Are you aware of any good resource materials
(articles, studies, etc.)? I would like to include something in the
conf. materials.
Hope all is well with you.
Mike
