RE: Intensive family preservation
Look for research by Ray Kirk. He has thoroughly researched N.C. and his
evaluation tool is used widely in the nation. Washington State is in the
midst of an OCAN funded evaluation of their program. Check on the ACF site
for details on this.

Subject: Intensive family preservation
Dear colleagues
I am aware that this topic has been a contested area among researchers in
recent years, however I am writing now to ask for
further information. I am working with two agencies in different parts of
the north of England who are introducing an intensive,
home-based, 6 week model of family preservation (along the lines of the
Homebuilders model) for families where parents have
susbtance dependence problems (alcohol, rather than other substances) and
where steps to remove the children from home are
imminent, without this intervention. I would be grateful if colleagues could
point me to any succinct summary of the arguments
for, and concerns about, this intervention in terms of the latest north
American research. My sense is that this model is
effective with some, but possibly a minority, of families. A particular
interest is in any research on the charateristics of
families where it is more successful, and also on models of service
evaluation that have proved helpful.
