The proposed special issue focuses on the outcomes of
children involved with two important social service contexts: child welfare and
juvenile justice. There is a general consensus that victims of child
maltreatment are at an increased risk of juvenile delinquency. Unfortunately
there is little research that identifies the factors responsible for this
increased risk. There is even less research on the outcomes associated with
dependent youth once they enter the juvenile justice system.

<span style='font-size:

This special issue will address important gaps in the
literature and help inform the development of innovative policies and practices
specific to child welfare and juvenile justice. As guest editors, we encourage
manuscripts that evaluate interventions designed to decrease the risk of
delinquency for dependent youth (front end issues). We also encourage
manuscripts that focus on the outcomes associated with dependent youth in the
juvenile justice system (back end issues). Questions of interest include but
are not limited to: What is the effectiveness of a particular intervention
(policy or program) designed to reduce juvenile delinquency in the child
welfare system? What aspects or components of the child welfare and/or
juvenile justice system (e.g. provision of mental health services, provision of
substance abuse services, timing of service delivery, legal representation,
composition of treatment groups, etc.) are associated with important outcomes?
Important outcomes include but are not limited to delinquency, adjudication
rates, recidivism, transfer to adult court, academic achievement, employment,
participation in treatment programs and general measures of child and family
well being. Also invited are empirical studies that focus on reducing minority
overrepresentation in the juvenile justice system – and specifically the
transfer of minority youth from child welfare to juvenile justice. Minority
overrepresentation is a critical issue for both child welfare and juvenile
justice systems. Thus, rigorous evaluations of policies and programs designed
to reduce overrepresentation are encouraged. Finally, the guest editors will
consider meta-analyses and manuscripts which focus on risk assessments for
dependent – delinquent youth.
