RE: child maltreatment and truancy
Here are a few articles that may offer insight into the relationship between
abuse and truancy --Stephanie Dallam
Garnefski, N., & Arends, E. (1998). Sexual abuse and adolescent
maladjustment: differences between male and female victims. Journal of
Adolescence, 21(1), 99-107. (The results also indicated that the experience
of sexual abuse carried far more consequences for boys than for girls
regarding the use of alcohol, aggressive/criminal behaviour, use of drugs,
and the amount of truancy, as well as regarding suicidal thoughts and
behaviour.)
Widom CP, Ames MA. (1994) Criminal consequences of childhood sexual
victimization. Child Abuse & Negect, 18(4), 303-18. (Childhood sexual abuse
victims were at increased risk of arrest as a juvenile for being a runaway.)
McCormack A, Janus MD, Burgess AW. (1986). Runaway youths and sexual
victimization: gender differences in an adolescent runaway population. Child
Abuse & Neglect, 10(3), 387-95. (Our study of 144 adolescent runaways finds
that 38% of male runaways (n = 89) and 73% of female runaways (n = 55)
report having been sexually abused.)
Herrera VM, McCloskey LA. Sexual abuse, family violence, and female
delinquency: findings from a longitudinal study. Violence Vict. 2003
Jun;18(3):319-34. (Self-reports of delinquency (violent and nonviolent),
running away, and violence against parents were collected on sample followed
longitudinally)
