Re: home visiting in Britain and Denmark

In Victoria Australia, there has long been a maternal and child health
system (since the 1940s I think) ... I gather this idea was taken up from
the UK. This involves triple certificate nurses who include outreach work
in their role and would visit any new born child in their locality whose
family had not contacted them to make an appointment.

In the 1990s this role was changed so that more frequent contacts including
home visits moved to the initial weeks at home for the child, with less
frequent contact later on. I'm sure that now an initial home visits within
a few days of return home are standard. M&CHS is not part of the Child
Protection (but the same Dept budgets for both), but they are a significant
source of notifications and on-going support to families with infant
children. They generally work out of local councils, community health
centres and such. A current innovation is for Protective workers to be
outposted to services with M&CHS and other such services in localities of
high re-notifications.

I have an old article stating that home visiting of new
mothers is routine in Denmark and Britain. is this still
true? Does anyone know in what other countries new mothers
are routinely visited and by whom, without necessarily being
part of a "risk group?"

Thanks.
