Effectiveness measures for residential facilities for delinquent youth
The Connecticut Juvenile Training School (CJTS) is a residential facility of
the CT Department Children and Families, serving male youth who have been
adjudicated delinquent by the courts. As part of assessing the
effectiveness of its efforts, we would like to ask the listserv for help in
two areas:
1. Most current measures of youth's behavior while at the facility
essentially measure whether the youth avoided trouble - e.g. did he get into
fights, did he try to run away, etc. Are there any measures which look for
whether the youth achieved positive behavior, rather than whether he avoided
negative behavior? Academic progress is an obvious one, are there any more?
2. CJTS is looking for ways to measure the success of youth after
discharge. Can anyone recommend studies of outcomes after discharge from
similar facilities, or can you steer us towards advice on how to establish
outcome measures and collect data in this area?
Thank you for your attention.
