David,

I have twice
researched this issue for defense counsel - How sexually dangerous are men
convicted of possessing child pornography to flesh and blood
children? There isn't much hard information anywhere, never mind
"with a British Bias." Some unpublished material gives cause for concern,
but has not been peer reviewed. Go to www.delko.net/ftp/porn and look at the
9 files there. You may find something of value. Note that the Prison Study
(Hernandez et al) was a conference presentation - ATSA 2000. The
Meta-analysis comes from a Canadian, "pro-family" web site. To my
knowledge, neither of these two articles has been submitted for peer review,
much less published in a peer reviewed setting. The U.S. postal
inspectors' info is interesting. I once talked with Ray Smith, the
inspector who puts it together for that agency. He sounded sincere and
reasonable but again, no scientific scrutiny of the information they present.

Some of the information you'll see at the ftp site, particularly
the Hernandez et al study, is being cited in court opinions even though it
hasn't been through peer review - that's how little there is and how anxious
some people are to make their points on this emotionally loaded subject. I
don't know that you'll get much help with developing assessment guidelines from
these articles, but they are all I could find.

I've assessed a few
of these folks, but have not come up with a single formula. I would
however, recommend using:

1. The Multiphasic Sexual Inventory with
special attention to its molester comparison scale. At
nicholsandmolinder.com

2, Abel Assessment for Sexual Interests,
with special attention to its Probability Values Available at
abelscreen.com

3. A polygraph examination regarding whether he has
molested children. You need an examiner especially trained in sex offender
testing - not sure if they have those in GB.) Try contacting Don Grubin,
who is working on introducing clinical use of polygraph with sex offenders in
England. Contact info is:

Don Grubin, M.D.
St. Nicholas

David,

Boy, you have to be on the cutting edge of inquiry. I would
suggest you contact forensic psychologists for risk and assessment issues, but I
can't imagine that there's too much out there providing guidance on the risk of
offending related to internet child pornography. A very covert
activity.

I recently read an opinion that may
be of interest to you though. You can find it at: www.delko.net. Click on Opinions, then Why
Men Molest Children. Read down until you get to the discussion of research
regarding adult sexual attraction to children. Consider/ponder the
information provided in the article, and the underlying research, for value
related to your question of risk of offending associated with interest in child
pornography.

Best Wishes,
