<x-flowed>
This is to announce that the deadline for applications to the National
Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being Special Research Meeting has been
extended to January 23, 2004.
Full details on the Meeting are included below.
National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being
Special Research Meeting
Cornell University, June 2-6, 2004
The National Data Archive on Child Abuse and Neglect is sponsoring a
Special Research Meeting dedicated to the National Survey of Child and
Adolescent Well-Being (NSCAW). The Meeting will take place at Cornell
University on June 2-6, 2004. The Meeting will bring together a small group
of researchers who are working on specific research projects using the
NSCAW data. Over the course of the Meeting, participants will attend
sessions focusing on standards of practice in analyzing NSCAW data.
Participants will also spend significant amounts of time working directly
with NSCAW data on secure computers. The Meeting will provide an invaluable
opportunity for networking with other NSCAW users.
Experienced and new users of either the General or Restricted Release NSCAW
data are encouraged to apply. Visit the NSCAW Waves 1-3 dataset page to
learn how to obtain the data.
DESCRIPTION OF NSCAW:
The Administration on Children, Youth, and Families and the Office of the
Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation have undertaken the
National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being (NSCAW). NSCAW makes
available, for the first time, nationally representative longitudinal data
drawn from first-hand reports of children and families or other caregivers
who have had contact with the child welfare system. Data from service
providers are also collected. NSCAW is the first national study to provide
detailed information on the experiences of children and families with the
child welfare system and to collect measures of well-being for this population.

*Note: The NSCAW data are made available only to professors and research
staff at academic institutions or research organizations whose NSCAW
project has been authorized by an institutional review board (IRB).
Graduate students may access the dataset by working with a faculty member
who has obtained the data. Past alumni from the Archive's Summer Research
Institute may apply to attend the Special Research Meeting. Applications
must be received by January 23, 2004. Selected participants will be
notified in mid-February.
OVERVIEW OF MEETING ACTIVITIES
For the first half of the Meeting, participants will attend presentations
by members of the NSCAW project team and other experienced users of the
data. Presentations will address methodological and analytic issues within
the context of specific research questions. In the second half of the
Meeting, participants will work intensively with the data on secure
computers in a supportive environment. Consultants and the other
participants will be available to provide technical support and assist with
statistical analysis issues.
SCHEDULE AND ACCOMMODATIONS
Participants should arrive by Wednesday evening (6/2) for an opening
orientation and dinner at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will conclude after lunch
on Sunday (6/6). The cost of housing, tuition, and some meals will be
covered by the Archive. However, participants will be responsible for their
travel expenses and most dinners. Participants will stay in private rooms
at the Statler Hotel on the Cornell campus.
SELECTION OF PARTICIPANTS
Fourteen applicants will be selected based on the quality of their research
plan, academic credentials, and experience using the NSCAW data.
Familiarity with the dataset is essential for successful applicants.
Previous research experience in the child welfare field will also
strengthen your application. The Application for the Meeting is available
in HTML, PDF and MS Word formats at this address:
