Rates are usually quoted as 1-2 per 100, or 10-20 per 1,000, using standard Epi denominators. For rarer disorder like SBS, we use 1-2 per 100,000.

The rate implies numbers of cases over time, but can also be expressed as a percentage. Be careful: we are talking about incidence, not prevalence. Prevalence rates are thought to be higher, plateauing at 25% or more by the age of 18y.

I have a basic question about rates and percentages.
If the rate of maltreatment is 5,000 for every 100,000
children under 18.....does this mean that 5% of the
population under 18 is at risk of maltreatment? If
not, could someone clarify the difference between
rates and percentages. What is the benefit of
reporting one over the other? Thanks you for helping
me with this problem.
