RE: web-based research

Just this weekend I was exploring a website for Martin Seligman's book
Authentic Happiness. The site includes about a dozen
self-assessment tests, some short, others fairly long. The tests
give you a score and percentile feedback. One of the tests is
apparently being validated via the website. It includes a log-on
process so you can repeatedly access your Results page.

http://www.authentichappiness.org/

Perhaps you could contact Dr. Seligman for his perspective on
web-administered questionnaires.

Best wishes,
We were thinking of starting with a 10 item demographic questionnaire and
a
10 item quiz to explore the public's level of knowledge about child
molesters. (true, false, don't know) The incentive to complete
would be
finding out one's score at the end of the procedure, which would
probably
take them 3 - 5 minutes to complete. How does that sound to
you?

Collecting IP addresses might avoid massive duplication. Most are
dynamically assigned, but don't change during sessions, so people would
have
to dial in repeatedly to foil us. Only a highly motivated saboteur
would
bother. People with always-on connections couldn't even do that, though
I'm
sure a few highly skilled hackers could. Altogther, collecting IP
addresses
could go a long way towards discouraging multiple responding. But
what
about confidentiality? We intended to promise people complete
anonymity
while offering them the option of accepting a cookie to keep their
demographic data in the event they return for future
questionnaires. Might
collecting IP address without permission violate research
ethics?

Thank you again for your assistance.

Hello

I've conducted website research and am finishing the development of
a
tailor-izeable tool for students and other researchers to use.

These are excellent questions.

Encouraging someone to complete a survey online is much the same as
doing so in person with pencil and paper instruments.... some
researchers use small incentives, which would be harder to deliver
via web. Having done a great deal of web-based information
gathering, I can only say that by "human factoring" the pages
to
reasonable lengths and by informing the participant at the
beginning
and throughout, how many pages there are and how close to the
completion they are, is about all you can do.

As for preventing people from making multiple records, the web
server
can gather data such as the incoming IP address and record that
with
the record so as to detect possible multiple submissions from the
same computer.

Feel free to contact me off-listserve for more help or technical
information.
We are exploring a possible IV-e waiver for kinship caregiver support. I
would appreciate any information on current Beltway/Washington, DC
perspectives on both waivers and kinship research:
Waivers- have heard they may be halted/changed, is that true? Also,
what is current thinking on evaluation- is a comparison of a waiver
county compared with other urban counties in the state possible or are
is random assignment of cases pretty much expected now?
Kinship- What is the current Beltway view of the Illinois experience
with subsidized guardianship? Is there support for further
experimentation with alternative $ arrangements for kin?
Thanks, David
