Folks,

I don't know how many of you remember Kathleen J. Sternberg who, with her
husband Michael Lamb, did some of the most seminal work in the effects of
the abuse on children, as well as interviewing issues. Kathy lost
her valiant battle with cancer earlier this week. She is a real
loss to all of us.

Apparently, Kathy and her husband designated a specific charity to
receive contributions in lieu of gifts or flowers. Here is the
information:

HomeCall Hospice Service, Inc., 10200 Old Columbia Rd., Suite MN,
Columbia, MD 21046 (1-800-543-0696).

Be sure to include a note with your gift indicating that your gift is in
honor of
KATHLEEN J. STERNBERG

Again, Michael, our deepest sympathies

I've been reading the recent ongoing discussion on the board regarding the
overrepresentation of African American children in the child welfare system
with some excitement because that is definitely an area of interest of mine. I
think we all acknowledge, or at least some of us do, that minorities are
overrepresented in the country's child welfare system in proportion to their
percentage of the population, but I don't think we make the next step which is
asking why. We also don't ask the question of what we can do to reverse this
situation.

I'm curious if anyone on the list is aware of any state that is making a
concerted effort to address overrepresentation of minorities in the child
welfare system. What success they have had, what is it that they are actually
doing, and also, a related topic, how do child welfare agencies deal with the
special issues confronting Biracial children in the child welfare system? The
state that I'm most familiar with-Missouri, has always just considered
Biracial children as African American children. How are other states tackling
this issue?
