RE: demographic categories--race & culture



 

Like a couple of other respondents I am struck by the USA specific nature of the definitions offered, assuming the research is to be
international. I rather think Canada might throw up some different definitions. The UK certainly does. Asian in the UK generally means from
the are sometimes called the Indian sub-continent, i.e. India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. 
There are also specific ethnic groups identified in the Pacific area, in both Australia and New Zealand and the islands in those areas.

Perhaps my greatest concern would be any suggestion of defining people as of 'mixed race'. We generally use the term dual heritage but where
such specific ethnic/cultural origins were being counted, this would require some specification.

For myself, I prefer self definition and ask particpants in research to define their own origins.
