RE: lResearch questionnaire on emotional abuse

Dr. Hagemeister --

Thank you for your response. I apologize for not including that portion
when I posted to the group.

For the survey portion that I sent out to the public, an attached letter
of consent was included that explained their rights, survey purpose, any
potential dangers, guidelines for anonymous submission, and gave contact
information for further questions.

For the professionals I that I contacted, I was approaching it from the
aspect of an interview, more than an attempt to gather statistical data.
I apologize for not making that clear. I did erroneously leave out a
line in the query that I posted to the forum that stated professionals
reserved the right to ask that their comments be kept confidential when
being utilized in the project. Again, I apologize for not making those
two differentiations when I posted.

Thank you for your feedback and I will discuss it with my advisor and
committee.

Sincerely,

Angela Dunkin

Angela:
While I applaud your efforts at researching this topic, I am concerned
that what you are asking now is a breech of professional ethics for
psychology, social work, and other fields in that you have not
includeded any informed consent procedure. I don't know if you were
somehow not made aware of that, but at my University any and all
research, student or faculty conducted, must go through our Human
Subject's Committee of the Institutional Review Board before data can be
gathered. While I would like to answer your questions, I have no
assurance that my answers are confidential nor that my participation is
confidential. As an instructor of research methods and a social work
professional, I believe you need to address these concerns in your work
or talk to your professor(s) about how to approach this.

I am a psychology student at Troy State University in Montgomery, AL
doing a final senior project that examines professional and public
perception of emotional abuse. What has already been completed is a
survey sent to a random public sample of the population and I have
received good responses to that. Unfortunately, my attempts to get
feedback from psychology/counseling professionals have been rather
dismal*only one response.

What I am now looking for is either similar survey
information/subjective feedback/research material from psychology
professionals on the topic OR professionals willing to fill out the
survey below in the next day or so. If you are feeling charitable and
would like to contribute to the project, I have included the short
professional survey below. The professional survey is subjective
(whereas the public survey was objective). Survey responses can be
emailed back to me. Thank you to those who choose to participate.

In addition, if you are interested in the results of the study, I will
be happy to send you the URL where you can view the completed project,
including the raw data gathered from the public sample, when it is
posted.

Professionals Questionnaire:

1) The first section of the survey given to the public, consisted of
demographic questions. For your portion, as a mental health
professional, please identify your training in the field of mental
health, length of time spent in the mental health profession, and what
type of work you currently perform/what population you treat (i.e. LPC
background treating people with addictive behaviors for 3 years, etc.).

2) Please think about the term "emotional abuse" apart from all other
forms of abuse. If you had to explain this term in non-technical
language (not as a textbook definition) to the average person, what
would be your definition?

3) Thinking about the population you currently treat, work with, and/or
study, what percentage of those would you consider suffered just
emotional abuse as opposed to those who have suffered from other forms
of abuse (whether in conjunction with emotional abuse or not)?

4) Below are different descriptions of abuse. Based on your knowledge
of each description of abuse, rank them in the order of severity.
(Where 1 = worst type of abuse and 5 = mildest). They are listed below
in no particular order.

____ physical abuse

____ emotional abuse

____ sexual abuse

____ neglect

____ verbal abuse

5) Consider the following quote from Dr. Bruce Perry, chief of
psychiatry at Texas Children's Hospital:

"If you asked me to take a 6-month old and choose between breaking every
bone in its body or emotionally ignoring it for two months, I'd say the
baby would better off if you broke every bone in its body. Bone tissue
is different from brain tissue. Bones can heal. But if an infant
misses out on two months of crucial brain stimulation, you will have a
forever disorganized brain."

Would you say you agree or disagree with this statement? Why or why
not?

6) Based on your knowledge of emotional abuse, is there one section of
the population that finds it more detrimental? Or is emotional abuse
equally damaging no matter what the age, sex, race, or economic position
of the person?

7) Do you think there is sufficient public awareness about the topic of
emotional abuse -- including prevention, treatment, and long-term
effects? Why or why not?
