The three studies of Independent Living Programs (ILP) that included a
comparison group of foster youth not receiving ILP services (Waldinger
& Furman, 1994; Scannapieco et al., 1995, 1996; Lindsey & Ahmed,
1999) found that the youth receiving the services were performing better
on educational outcomes. Several evaluations of the Foster Youth Services
program (a program in California) reported children receiving those
services (tutoring, counseling, academic case management) made
improvement on academic outcomes. Wolf et al. (2000), reporting on an
experiential education program, found that a higher percentage of youth
participating in the program graduated from high school or earned a GED
than their counterparts not participating in the program. Donlevy (2000)
conducted an evaluation of a school that included academic courses and
technology-based vocational courses (students building, testing, and
using their own computers) and found that students showed improvement on
the Regents Competency Tests in New York.
I hope that is helpful.
Dear List Members -
We are conducting some research around child welfare
training. I am currently looking for exercises (that
instructors might use in the MSW classroom) related to
person in environment assessments (PIE). I remember
these from my days in HBSE but unfortunately I can't
find the materials. Does anyone have such exercises
that I could use with our staff and researchers?
Bill
