The National Data Archive on Child Abuse and Neglect (NDACAN) will
sponsor its eleventh Summer Research Institute for child maltreatment
researchers on the Cornell University campus in Ithaca, New York on May
27- May 31, 2003. Conducted annually since 1993, the Summer Research
Institute is an intensive experience in secondary data analysis that
combines colloquia with hands-on computing time. Participants are
selected on a competitive basis from a wide variety of disciplines
including psychology, social work, and medicine. The primary goal of the
Institute is to facilitate secondary analysis projects from which
researchers can publish. In addition, the Institute provides child
maltreatment researchers an invaluable opportunity for networking and
collaboration.
OVERVIEW OF INSTITUTE ACTIVITIES
Using data from the NDACAN holdings, applicants develop research
questions and describe their projects in their applications. Accepted
applicants are encouraged to obtain their datasets prior to arriving at
the Institute so that they can familiarize themselves with the data and
conduct preliminary analyses. While at the Institute, participants have
the opportunity to work intensively with the data. Consultants and other
participants are available to provide technical support and assist with
statistical analysis issues. In addition to the computing sessions,
participants attend statistical and research lectures. At the end of the
Institute, participants return home ready to complete their projects. The
goal for all participants is a conference paper or journal article.
SCHEDULE AND ACCOMMODATIONS
Participants should arrive by Tuesday evening (5/27) for an opening
orientation and dinner at 6:30 p.m. Computing sessions will be held
Wednesday through Saturday beginning at 9:00 a.m. The Institute will
conclude after lunch on Saturday (5/31). The cost of housing, tuition,
and some meals will be covered by NDACAN. However, participants will be
responsible for their travel expenses and most dinners. Participants will
stay in private rooms at the Statler Hotel on the Cornell campus.
DIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIPS
NDACAN is offering three scholarships to cover the travel expenses for
two minority participants and one graduate student. Applicants who ask to
be considered for the scholarships will be selected partly based on the
distance they need to travel and the likely associated cost. It is hoped
that these scholarships will promote a diverse array of applicants who
would otherwise be unable to attend the Institute.
SELECTION OF PARTICIPANTS
Fourteen applicants will be selected based on the clarity of their
research plan, familiarity with the dataset, previous research
experience, publication history, and work in the child maltreatment
field. Scholars, research professionals, and advanced graduate students
are encouraged to apply. Applicants who were not accepted in a previous
year may reapply. The application may be found on the NDACAN Web site.
Application is also attached to this e-mail in MS Word format.
Applications must be received by February 15, 2003. Participants will be
notified of acceptance in mid-March. Please direct correspondence
regarding the Institute to Andrés Arroyo (Phone:607-255-7799; E-mail:
NDACAN@cornell.edu).
