Subject: RE: Family Group Conferences / permanency planning

Dear Child Maltreatment Researchers,

The question has been posed about the effect of Family Group Conferencing on
permanency planning. There is a growing, international body of research and
evaluative studies that measures a variety of outcomes for families and
children who participate in family group conferencing. Many of these
studies are highlighted on our website at www.ahafgdm.org. The website also
provides full text reports, instrumentation and contact information.
Communities engaged in family group conferencing are fully aware of the need
to conduct research to demonstrate outcomes and create a continuous quality
improvement process for FGCs. Some of the studies that you might find most
interesting are: Burford and Pennell (Outcome Summary Report, the full
study is distributed by AHA and is higlighted in a CHILD WELFARE journal);
the Miami Model Court Evaluation (done by the NCJFCJ); the Washington State
study on long-term outcomes; the work in the UK by Marsh and Crow and Louise
Brown and Carol Lupton; and the work by Sundell in Sweden. This is just a
partial list: evaluations are occurring in Utah, Massachusettes, Michigan,
North Carolina, Hawaii, Stanislaus County California, and by UC Berkeley on
two other counties in California (Riverside and Fresno). There are also 3
recent studies done on Family Conferencing in Santa Clara County, San Jose,
CA.

If you have any questions about FGC research or would like direction to any
of these studies, I am reachable at lisa@americanhumane.org. For more
information about our national center on fgdm, you can visit our website at
www.ahafgdm.org.

Many thanks!
