RE: Child neglect statistics -CALIFORNIA

I have been interested in how maltreatment effects conscience development, as well as exploring conscience development in sexual offenders. I have been intrigued by the work of Dr. Barbara Stillwell and Matthew Galvin at Indiana's University. ( I have a list of their published works if anyone is interested. Matt Galvin just sent me an announcement of a new electronic journal on the subject www.medlib.iupui.edu/conscience/  called Conscience Works.

Dear Niki :

Please forward the following announcement to any persons and/or students of conscience you think may be interested.

Thanks, Matt.

I am an educator, researcher and physician-therapist in the area of biopsychosocial sequelae of maltreatment. My colleagues and I at the Indiana University Conscience Project are interested in establishing communications with those of you who have a particular interest in conscience topics such as the effects of maltreatment upon the formation and functioning of conscience. Some of our work has been published in the International Journal of Child Abuse and Neglect but for a more recent review and overview which can not be accomodated in journal form, we invite interested persons to visit the inaugural volume of the journal Conscience Works, electronically published by The Indiana University Conscience Project at

                         www.medlib.iupui.edu/conscience/

The first submission under "Theory and Research" is devoted to  "Conscience Sensitive Psychiatric Diagnosis in Maltreated Children and Adolescents." Illustrations include conscience drawings by maltreated children. The paper reviews and refines theory and ongoing research in the area of sequelae of maltreatment in domains of conscience development and functioning. The paper, including illustrations, while copyrighted, is freely available for downloading, as our object is dissemination and exchange of ideas in an area that is too often overlooked.  It is our intent to periodically review current literature and update this paper. In this regard we would appreciate any references of which members may know and consider pertinent for future inclusion in the growing bibliography Members can e-mail me or correspond with our editor, Dr. Meg Gaffney whose e-mail address appears on the home page of Conscience Works. While at the home page you may also wish to view The Conscience Celebration, our first conscience sensitive moral education offering for middle school age children in narrative form. A section of Conscience Works is reserved for Conscience in Ethics. Additional offerings with respect to conscience and maltreatment can be expected in future volumes.

Sincerely,

Matthew R. Galvin, M.D.

The annual America's Children report looks at 24 Key National Indicators of
Well-Being. The data tell a story of success and failure about how America
treats its children and youth - their economic security, health, behavioral
and social environment, and education. This important but underutilized
report, a collaborative effort by 20 federal agencies, is available from the
National Maternal and Child Health Clearinghouse (888-434-4624 or
nmchc@xxxxxxxxxxx) and on the web (http://childstats.gov). The attached
Commentary provides the "Cliff Notes" highlights.
