RE: Community Prevention Project

I encourage you to consider interview protocols that addrss multiple levels of RISK. if you limit yourself to the social service programs, then you cannot think outside the box enough to know what NEW and CREATive programs could be helpful for prevention. For instance, in a modest study I conducted with STop-It-Now, based on focus groups with Latinos and African Americans in Philadelphia (citation below), people recommended several prebention approaches that have not been implemented that we know of, including:
* door-to-door speaking with neighbors, in the style of missionaries or Avon (recommended by recent Latina immigrants)
* prevention programming--pamphlets and people available to converse--where people hang out in the summer, such as at fairs and community centers. Give out lemonade and information.
* murals, poster, billboards.
TGhe AIDS preventio movement has been much more creative than us. More funding, too, of course.
There was more. As long as we just evaluate what exists, I'm afraid we may not be able to imagine what is really needed. Hope I'm not offending anyone.

Subject: Community Prevention Project
Hello everyone!
I am a program evaluator and researcher at the Howard Phillips Center
for Children and Families in Orlando, FL. The program evaluation
department is currently working on a community prevention project called
"Project Prevention Orange." The goal of this project is to make
recommendations to the Orange County, FL community regarding child
abuse prevention: what are the best practices, what risk factors need to
be targetted, how to address gaps in service, etc.
The project is in its beginning stages. We are designing a community
needs assessment that will rate current prevention programs based on
review of program materials and focus groups with clients about the
programs. Ecological theory is our guding principle, so we would like to
assess how well prevention programs are supporting families at all
levels of the model.
I have two requests related to this project:
1) Is there anyone on this list that is involved in a similar communilty
prevention project starting "from scratch"? I would like to connect with
you about what you have learned.
2) Are there interview protocols out there that address multiple
ecological levels of social service programs?
Thank you for you time!
