child victims and press publicity
<x-html><html>
<x-tab> </x-tab>I have the
impression that in other countries, unlike in United States, there are
laws that bar the publication of personal information that would allow
the identification of juvenile crime victims, when the media cover crime
stories. In United States, any such protection is a function of
voluntary guidelines observed by the media. Can anyone direct me to
sources that could describe the statutory arrangements in other countries
on this topic?<br><br>

Here in the Northern Territory of Australia we have the Juvenile Justice Act and
the Community Welfare Act (child protection and substitute care) which deal with
children. Both prohibit the publication of any indentifying information about
child victims or child offenders. The Sexual Offences (Evidence and Procedure)
Act also prohibits releasing identifying information about child victims, as
well as adult victims.
The source site is www.nt.gov.au/lant/hansard/hansard.shtml. Follow the
directions to see legislation by title, alphabetically sorted.
Cheers
