<DIV>Hi Bill,</DIV>
<DIV>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV>You're right.&nbsp; Because the document was so brief there were a number
of sources that were omitted.&nbsp; Much more thorough general literature
reviews were done prior to our work.&nbsp;One excellent example&nbsp;are the
documents produced&nbsp;for the USDHHS evaluation of the original FP/FS
programs.&nbsp; The essence of our work was to identify empirically supported
practices that work.&nbsp; We selected representative works that we thought
captured much of what had been done.</DIV>
<DIV>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV>For a very thorough literature review that&nbsp;was up to date in 1995, it
is very instructive to look at the HHS work mentioned above.&nbsp; On family
preservation, there is an excellent review done by Julia H. Littell and John R.
Schuerman&nbsp;as part of the Westat, James Bell&nbsp;Associates and the
University of Chicago study.&nbsp;It is available on the ASPE&nbsp;website (<A
href="http://aspe.hhs.gov/hsp/cyp/FPLITREV.HTM";>http://aspe.hhs.gov/hsp/cyp/FPLITREV.HTM</A>).
More recently, interim study results of the&nbsp;Westat/UofC project have also
been posted (<A
href="http://aspe.hhs.gov/hsp/fampres94/index.htm";>http://aspe.hhs.gov/hsp/fampres94/index.htm</A>).</DIV>
<DIV>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV>Also around 1996,&nbsp;Abt did similar work with respect to family support.
It is less widely available but can be obtained, I believe, from Abt or the
National Clearinghouse on Child Abuse and Neglect (for the price of
copying).</DIV>
<DIV>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV>We know that there is even more out there now, and&nbsp;we're looking
forward to seeing references on the listserv&nbsp;to sources we may not have
known about or that were published after we completed our search.&nbsp; Also, if
you'd like to chat more offline, please feel free to write to me at&nbsp;<A
href="mailto:swells@umn.edu";>swells@umn.edu</A>.</DIV>
<DIV>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV>Susan</DIV>
<DIV>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV>Note: As an aside, if you do obtain a copy of the <U>Reference Text</U>, it
is important to note that the Family Centered Services folks in Illinois
identified the best practices for family reunification and adoption
support.&nbsp; While that hasn't been the focus of the conversation, it is
important to credit their hard work.</DIV>

Given the sensitivity to this issue, I wonder if anyone has any
reaction to the study presented by Diana Baumrind, Ph.D. at the APA
convention which found light to moderate spanking produced no
significent negative emotional effects (wording mine)? The study can
be read at http://ihd.berkeley.edu/BaumrindPaper.pdf
