RE: in-home services

>>In one of my studies of 200 families over 15 years working with families
already involved in abuse and neglect I found that 88% of those treated were
not resubstantiated for abuse or neglect.<<

Any comparison group? If yes, would appreciate a citation, or some way to
obtain the study report.

Thanks!

Bill,

My first question would be what kind of in-home services. I will give you
very different answers if it is more "home builders" or family preservation
rather than parent aide. Some of the responders have given good leads. I
have provided parent aide services for 20+ years using the Exchange Club
parent aide model which came out of the Arkansas SCAN model in the early
70's. In one of my studies of 200 families over 15 years working with
families already involved in abuse and neglect I found that 88% of those
treated were not resubstantiated for abuse or neglect.

There are similar studies around. A GREAT book on Home Visitation Services
is "Stopping Child Maltreatment Before It Starts" by Neil B. Guterman (Sage
Books) - it will give you numerous references and review numerous studies as
well as meta-analysises.

Let me also refer you to the National Parent Aide Network where national
standards for programs have been developed and a credentialing for parent
aides is available. They currently are piloting a program credentialing.
They are in Toledo, Ohio at 800-924-2643.

I manage Healthy Family, Intensive Family Preservation, Parents as Teachers,
Healthy Start, Adolescent Parenting, and Parent Aide programs - all of which
are in-home. They make a lot of sense and they work well.

Good Luck,

We are interested in providing more in-home services
to families. Could someone please provide a reference
as to why in-home services are important, and a
reference related to the effectiveness of in-home
services? Your comments have been very helpful to the
families served by our agency.

Bill
