Thank you!

Below is a description of the Institute:

National Data Archive on Child Abuse and Neglect
10th Annual Summer Research Institute
Cornell University, May 28-June 2, 2002

The National Data Archive on Child Abuse and Neglect (NDACAN) will sponsor
its tenth Summer Research Institute for child maltreatment researchers on
the Cornell University campus in Ithaca, New York on May 28- June 2, 2002.
Conducted annually since 1993, the week-long Summer Research Institute is
an intensive experience in secondary data analysis that combines colloquia
with hands-on computing time. Participants are selected on a competitive
basis from a wide variety of disciplines including psychology, social work,
and medicine. The primary goal of the Institute is to facilitate secondary
analysis projects from which researchers can publish. In addition, the
Institute provides child maltreatment researchers an invaluable opportunity
for networking and collaboration.

OVERVIEW OF INSTITUTE ACTIVITIES
Prospective applicants develop research questions that can be addressed
with data from the NDACAN holdings, and send in their applications. Once
selected to participate and before arriving at the Institute, each
participant obtains the data from the Archive and conducts preliminary
analyses to become familiar with the study and the structure of the data.
Upon arriving in Ithaca, participants share their analysis plans and
preliminary findings with other participants and NDACAN staff. Participants
receive assistance in refining their research plans, and resolving
technical problems and statistical analysis issues. The week's agenda
includes didactic workshops, research presentations, and extensive computer
time. Participants also have ample opportunity to collaborate with other
Institute participants. At the conclusion of the Institute, participants
will return home ready to complete their projects. The goal for all
participants should be a conference paper or journal article.

SCHEDULE AND ACCOMMODATIONS
Participants should arrive by Tuesday evening (5/28) for an opening
presentation and dinner at 7:00 p.m. Computing sessions will be held
Wednesday through Sunday beginning at 9:00 a.m. The Institute will conclude
after lunch on Sunday (6/2). The cost of housing, tuition, and some meals
will be covered by NDACAN. However, participants will be responsible for
their travel expenses and most dinners. Participants will be housed in
private rooms in a residence hall on the Cornell campus or may choose to
pay for their own accommodations (with partial reimbursement) at the
Statler Hotel on the Cornell campus.

DIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIPS
NDACAN is offering three scholarships to cover the travel expenses for two
minority participants and one graduate student. Applicants who ask to be
considered for the scholarships will be selected partly based on the
distance they need to travel and the likely associated cost. It is hoped
that these scholarships will encourage a diverse array of applicants who
would otherwise be unable to attend the Institute.

SELECTION OF PARTICIPANTS
Twelve applicants will be selected based on their previous research
experience, the clarity and precision of their research plan, and their
level of commitment to following their work through to completion.
Scholars, professionals involved in research, and advanced graduate
students are all encouraged to apply. Applicants who were not accepted to a
previous Summer Research Institute may reapply. Applications for the
Institute are available on the NDACAN Web site. Interested persons should
submit their typed or word-processed answers to the application questions
along with a recent curriculum vitae. All applications must be received by
February 15, 2002. Participants will be notified of acceptance on or about
March 15. Please direct all correspondence regarding the Summer Research
Institute to Andrés Arroyo (Phone: 607-255-7799; E-mail: NDACAN@cornell.edu).
