Re: Fw: how to screen child abuse
I have nothing against a study about child maltreatment, nor about screening children, necessarily. I think this has many potential benefits. My concerns, however, have to do with the context in which such a study may be done and the unintended consequences.
In the U.S. and many other countries there are very stringent guidelines for how such information is obtained and utilized, etc. (Which connects with the present discussion on this list about IRB's and ethics related to DV and CAN research.) BUT, I don't know what the context is in Iran. And, it does raise some concerns for me about, "What then?" Meaning, the chidren are screened, and then what? What is the response system in Iran? Is there mandated reporting? Are children removed? Are the parents investigated, arrested if the screening is "positive" for child maltreatment? And what of the issues of economic differentials, civil rights, religion, impact of war, etc.?
So, while I think there are many tools which can be used, I think is may also be our responsibility to provide other feedback to the researchers. Yes?

This came across my e-mail. My initial response was going to be that
screening tools for this age have not been sufficiently well developed to be
used in this context, but I hope the listserve can do better than me.
