RE: Research with Children
We struggled with this issue. You might want to look at Journal of
Interpersonal Violence, Volume 15, number 7, July 2000. The entire issue
focuses on ethical, legal, and methodological issues of directly asking
children about abuse. There are many different approaches suggested,
including obtaining waivers.

We are preparing to undertake a study where we might use the following
provision of the IRB procedure identified in 45 CFR
"If the IRB determines that a research protocol is designed for conditions
or for a subject population for which parental or guardian permission is not
a reasonable requirement to protect the subjects (for example, neglected or
abused children). It may waive the consent requirement ... provided an
appropriate mechanism for protecting the children who will participate as
subjects in the research is substituted."
Does anyone have experience with this provisions?
