Chris:  I did a very simple weighted (by number of cases in the studies that I
included which include the key ones: Cook, Courtney, Festinger etc) regarding the
analysis of educational outcomes for former foster youth. WE came up with an
estimate of 60% of foster youth followed in these studies (for a varied period of
time) had completed high school or gotten their GED; so that leaves a roughly 40%
drop out rate.  (These figures do, of course, precede the end to social
promotion/graduation and the institution ofcomprehensive end of grade exams, which
appear to be having an adverse effect on disadvantaged youth, regarding graduation
rates--at least according to NC data.  They also precede any significant
participation of Latino youth in foster care, which could also effect the

The Youth Development Program of Interface Children Family Services provides 
independent living skill training and case management for youth, ages 16-18, 
who have been removed from their homes because of abuse and have been living 
in foster homes.  We are seeking statistical information about how well 
older foster youth do in school and the dropout rate.  Your information is 
appreciated.
