RE: economy and child maltreatment
Ken,
Along with the cites Sandi McLeod sent you, NIS-3 is very convincing about
the positive correlation between poverty and all forms of child
maltreatment. However, I interpreted your question to refer to economic
fluctuations and CWS referrals/substantiations - do
referrals/substantiations go up when times get tougher, down when the
economy is good? Is that what you meant? TO me, it stands to reason that
this kind of relationship exists, but I'm unaware of documentation either
way.

Dear Ken,
Attached please find a couple of citations from our documents collection
that deal with the issue of how child maltreatment is affected by family
economic circumstances. Please note that Jane Waldfogel, Associate
Professor at the Columbia University School of Social Work, can be reached
by email at jw205@columbia.edu.
I hope that this is useful information.
Sincerely,
