RE: Articles

I agree that you need to be more specific about the request. Nonetheless, a
few films come to mind immediately.

"Once Were Warriors" covers physical and sexual abuse of children,
alcoholism/substance abuse, and domestic violence in powerful and integrated
fashion. It is however, quite graphic. We use it for teaching CWS workers,
always warn them about its graphic nature and make it clear they can leave
the room if they feel unable to handle the material. Nonetheless, a few
(usually victims themselves) report intrusive thoughts and nightmares the
next day. It may be a bit much for the kids in your project. On the other
hand, they are in a therapy group, where-in they presumably have plenty of
time to process the material. (unlike the CWS workers who see it in a
classroom setting) You might preview it and see what you think.

"Where the Spirit Lives" covers institutional abuse (of North American
Natives) quite well.

"Bastard out of Carolina" deals with incest.

"Radio Flyer" covers physical abuse.

I think you need to be a bit more specific about your request. I recent
completed a group supervision project using movies to illustrate different
types of family functioning. Some of them would be good for the type of
discussion you're suggesting. Others may be a bit more questionable. If
you could give me an idea of the topics you wish to discuss, I could be more
specific. One movie that I would suggest, and it's more like a documentary
than a movie, would be "Scared Silent." It's a documentary about different
forms of abuse and neglect from the perspective of perpetrators and victims
of abuse that is very powerful. Oprah Winfrey produced this movie about 6-7
years ago.

I am working on a project that is using hollywood movies to facilitate group

therapy discussion amongst foster kids who've been abused or neglected.
Does
anyone know of any movies that have scenes that would be relevant for this
purpose. Please let me know any suggestions you might have. Thanks,
