Dear Christine, I strongly suggest you seek out the work of Mary Sue Moore 
who is based in Boulder, Colorado.  She has done many years of research on 
the drawings of abused children and would be a really useful place to start.  
You may be able to find some references for her work on Association for 
Infant Mental Health website - www.aimh.org.uk.  (I am sorry, I can't put my 
hand on her papers at the moment!)
