ARTICLE. Thoennes, Nancy; Tjaden, Patricia G. The extent, nature, and
validity of sexual abuse allegations in custody/visitation disputes. Child
Abuse & Neglect. Elsevier Science Inc: US, 1990. 14 (2): p. 151-163
Language: English.

Abstract: unassigned Information from mail and telephone surveys, personal
interviews with legal and mental health professionals, and empirical data
from 12 domestic relations courts in the US indicate that only a small
proportion of contested custody and visitation cases involve sexual abuse
allegations. 169 cases for which data were gathered from court counselors,
family court, and child protective service agency files also showed that
accusations were brought by mothers, fathers, and 3rd parties. In the 129
cases for which a determination of the validity of the allegation was
available, 50% involved abuse, 33% involved no abuse, and 17% resulted in an
indeterminate ruling. Four factors were significantly associated with the
perceived validity of the abuse report: victim's age, frequency of the
alleged abuse, prior abuse/neglect reports, and the time elapsing between
filing for divorce and the emergence of the allegation. (French & Spanish

I am hoping that someone on this list may be familiar with a study that was
completed in the 90's pertaining to the percentage of sexual abuse
allegations that occur in families where the parents of children are
divorcing, fighting for custody or have visitation disputes.

The population was 7,000 or 9,000 families. If you know of this study, I
would be very grateful if you would post.

Thank you.
