cultural constructs of chidl abuse

I am developing a research proposal on cultural competence and
practitioners' judgment on  presence or absence of child abuse or neglect.
Do you know of examples, definitions in other cultures/groups different from
mainstream American society?   Any idea where I can find reference of the
practice of female genitalia mutilation?  Lourdes Diaz Latorre, doctoral
