Hello - I am a Child Abuse Prevention Studies grad student at the
University of Minnesota
and am wondering if you have any information on (?) recidivism (?) of
child maltreatment. Specifically, I am looking at how many children
have either died or been taken away from their parents/caregivers who
have already been found guilty of maltreatment. I am even more
specifically targeting dysfunctional families, i.e., "broken
families" with histories of psychological problems, psychopaths,
psychotics, alcoholics, aggressive behavior, etc. Any information or
direction that could be provided would be extremely helpful.

I know it is broad. I have had a difficult time finding information
on these "untreatable families", but I keep plugging along. I am a
strong supporter of prevention; it is critical; however, prevention
"to what degree" ? It's no secret that if we could have fixed it by
now, we would have. Data suggests that many violent crimes against
children are increasing. Truthfully, I am just not sure how I feel
about tertiary prevention with some (many?)
families. "Oh, good job Mr. Smith, you only smacked Amy 5 times this
week." You get my picture. I'll be on this subject for quite a while.
