National Data Archive on Child Abuse and Neglect
Summer Research Institute
Cornell University, May 29-June 3, 2001

The National Data Archive on Child Abuse and Neglect (NDACAN) will sponsor
its Summer Research Institute for child maltreatment researchers on the
Cornell University Campus in Ithaca, New York on May 29- June 3, 2001.
Conducted annually since 1993, the week-long Summer Research Institute is
an intensive experience in secondary data analysis that combines colloquia
with hands-on computing time. Participants are selected on a competitive
basis from a wide variety of disciplines including psychology, social work,
and medicine. The primary goals of the Institute are to increase use of
NDACAN's holdings and to facilitate a secondary analysis project from which
child abuse and neglect researchers can publish. In addition, the Institute
provides child maltreatment researchers an invaluable opportunity for
networking and collaboration.

OVERVIEW OF INSTITUTE ACTIVITIES
Once selected, the applicant will design a secondary analysis project using
data from the NDACAN holdings. Prior to the start of the Institute, each
participant will obtain data from the Archive and perform exploratory
analyses. When they convene at Cornell, the participants will share their
analysis plans and preliminary findings with other participants and, with
the assistance of the Institute staff, work toward the completion of their
projects. The Institute staff will help participants refine their analysis
plans and resolve technical problems. The week's agenda will include
didactic workshops, research presentations and computing time for intensive
work with the datasets. Participants will also have an opportunity to give
brief presentations of their current research and receive feedback from the
other participants. The Institute staff will be comprised of members of the
NDACAN staff, other members of the Cornell community, and, in some cases,
principal investigators of the datasets with which the participants have
chosen to work. At the conclusion of the Institute, participants should
return home ready to complete their analyses. It is expected that each
participant's work will result in a conference paper or journal article.

SCHEDULE AND ACCOMMODATIONS
Participants should expect to arrive by Tuesday evening (5/29) for an
opening presentation at 7:00 p.m. Computing sessions will be held Wednesday
through Sunday beginning at 9:00 a.m. The Institute will conclude with
lunch on Sunday (6/3). The cost of housing, tuition, and most meals will be
covered by NDACAN. However, participants will be responsible for their
travel expenses. Participants will be housed in private rooms in a
residence hall on the Cornell campus. Alternatively, participants may
choose to pay for their own accommodations (with partial reimbursement) at
local hotels such as the Statler Hotel on the Cornell campus.

DIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIPS
This year for the first time, NDACAN is offering three scholarships to
cover airfare or other SRI-related expenses for two minority scholars and
one graduate student. It is hoped that these scholarships will enable
additional qualified applicants, regardless of means, to attend and benefit
from the SRI.

SELECTION OF PARTICIPANTS
Twelve applicants will be selected based on their previous research
experience, the clarity of their research plan, and level of commitment to
following their work through to completion. Scholars, professionals
involved in research, and advanced graduate students are all encouraged to
apply. Applicants who were not accepted to a previous Summer Research
Institute may reapply. Applications for the Institute are available here in
HTML (http://www.ndacan.cornell.edu/ndacan/SRI/SRIApplication.htm) or PDF
(http://www.ndacan.cornell.edu/ndacan/SRI/SRI2001Application.PDF) formats.
Interested persons should submit their typed or word-processed answers to
the application questions along with a recent curriculum vitae. All
applications must be received by February 15, 2001. Participants will be
notified of acceptance on or about March 15. Please direct all
