The OVC guidelines discussed below provides excellent information about
empirically supported treatments for children affected by child maltreatment
and their families.

also recommend:

Cohen, J., Mannarino, A., Berliner, L., & Deblinger (2000). Trauma-focused
cognitive behavioral therapy for children and adolescents: An empirical
update. Journal of Interpersonal Violence, 15, 1202-1223.

Saywitz, K., Mannarino, A., Berliner, L., & Cohen, J. (2000). Treatment for
sexually abused children and adolescents. American Psychologist, 55,
1040-1049.

Regarding the Rind controversy, recommend reading:
Ondersma, S., Chaffin, M., & Berliner, L. (1999). Comments on the Rind et
al. Meta-Analysis Controversy.
APSAC Advisor, 12, 2-5.

The special issue of Child Maltreatment that focused on juvenile sexual
offenders is:
Child Maltreatment: Journal of the American Professional Society on the
Abuse of Children. Vol 3(4), Nov 1998.

Depending on the ages of the children and goals of the initial assessment,
the Trauma Symptom Checklist for Children by
Briere may be useful. additional measures that may be useful when working
with non-offending parents are Mannarino and Cohen's measures: Parent
Emotional Reaction Questionnaire and the Parental Support Questionnaire.

best wishes

re: Screening - the CSBI, CSBL, and other symptom checklists would be
useful. With Sexual Abuse, there seems to be a tendency to over-treat.
http://www.musc.edu/cvc/guide1.htm and http://www.csulb.edu/~asc/child.html
may help shed light on this issue.

As for successful treatment of adolescent offenders, there is virtually no
empirical research with respectable follow-up times. There are
psycho-educational materials available from Sage Publications and Safer
Society Foundation, but they do not have empirically established efficacy.
Buyer beware! "The Juvenile Sex Offender" by Barbaree, Marshall and Hudson
(Guilford Press, 1993) is a good reference about Juvenile Offenders. Be
careful about assumptions that having been sexually abused causes becoming a
sexual abuser. Things are much more complicated than that and treatment
programs based on this simplistic assumption are not likely to be effective.

For sex abuse allegations in child custody issues, (which, by the way, is
MUCH more rare than commonly believed) read everything you can find by
Sandra Hewitt.

Good luck with your venture.

I am starting a childrens advocacy center with a focus on treatment to child
victims of sexual abuse. I plan to collaborate with local agencies that
will provide therapy for these children at the cac.
I want to encorporate a screening tool for trauma into the intake process. I
am unsure which one to use.

I also want to utilize a model that weighs factors of risk and resliency to
help guide team decisions and the therapy process. I know there are such
models but I can't get my hands on one.

I need to develop provisions in the protocols for making treatment
recommendations for both juvenile sex offenders who have histories of
victimization and for families where there is a sex abuse allegation and
custody issues.

I would particulary appreciate any research that discusses juvenile sex
offenders and treatment strategies which are successful. Also helpful would
be any information which a multidisciplinary team could use to make
recommendations where there are custody issues involved.
