Re: parenting curricula
You might look at the Strengthening Multi-Ethnic Families and Communities Program. The program addresses violence against the self (drugs/alcohol) and violence against others (child abuse, domestic violence, crime, gangs). This program is one of the promising family strengthening programs identified by the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention for replication. For more information, you can contact the principal author, Marilyn Steele, Ph.D., in LA, CA at 323-936-0343 or dr_mls@earthlink.net
To see a list of Exemplary, Model, and Promising parenting programs supported by CSAP and OJJDP, you can find a literature review and list of model programs at http://www.strengtheningfamilies.org/

Some of the listmembers have read previous messages in which I described
Project SAFE and other programs in Illinois which provide services to
addicted women with histories of abusing and/or neglecting their children. I
am serving on a small task force which is addressing the issue of parenting
education/classes/groups within these programs. There is a sense within the
State that the current curricula and materials are insufficient, and I would
greatly appreciate any help I can get with regard to this issue. We are
looking for parenting curricula/materials that:
1) Are culturally sensitive (the largest number of clients are
African-American/black, but European-American/white clients are
well-represented too)
2) Take into account clients who live in both rural and urban settings.
3) Integrate addiction recovery principles into parenting education
efforts.
4) Can be individualized as well as provided in a group/classroom setting,
since clients have different needs at different times. A "one size fits
all" approach is just as inappropriate here as it would be in addiction
counseling.
I should mention that what we are looking for needs to be all of the above.
There are plenty of curricula that meet one of two of these criteria, but
none that we have found that meet all.
I thank you in advance for your help!!
