Manager, Injury Surveillance Unit Starting Salary Range: $39,330-46,975

To oversee, manage and evaluate health databases pertinent to injury surveillance in the Health Statistics and Data Management section, to establish new injury databases, to provide supervision and oversight to HSDM staff on injury related analysis, and to coordinate the integration of Division of Public Health Services injury databases with other pertinent databases in the Department of Health and Human Services.
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Ø Oversees the CDC Cooperative agreement for CORE Injury Surveillance Capacity; preparing analyses, progress reports, and chairing the Injury Surveillance Working Group. Ø Supervises the HSDM Chronic Disease/Injury Epidemiologist in the production and use of statistical analyses, dissemination of results, and other program activities for injury surveillance purposes. Ø Collaborates with the DPHS Injury Prevention Program to support their needs for injury data for health assessment and prevention planning. Ø Provides analytical advice to the State Injury Prevention Advisory Committee. Ø Advises DPHS staff about the selection of appropriate statistical techniques to analyze injury data Ø Interprets data from a policy perspective, prepares or supervises the preparation of the annual Injury Report and other analytical reports and papers on findings, and presents the papers and reports to appropriate audiences. Ø Assists in the selection of secondary data sets and reference materials for acquisition and coordinates their integration Health Statistics and Data Management’s databases. Ø Develops policy manuals and quality control procedures for data analysis and data reporting systems. Ø Maintains an in-depth working knowledge of the databases in the Division, including establishing and maintaining working relationships with the responsible data collection organizations and agencies. Ø Coordinates annual trainings of hospital personnel on proper injury coding methods. Provides technical assistance to Department officials collecting or designing data collection activities, and consultation to governmental agencies and to the private sector on the interpretation and analyses of health data. Ø Develops, coordinates and conducts training courses for data users regarding uses and applications of the HSDM’s databases. Ø Designs data collection systems from primary data sources and coordinates their implementation with agency officials. Ø Collaborates in the design and implementation of injury research projects and policy analyses at the Department and Division levels. Ø Analyzes and evaluates management methods, procedures and data for administrative management.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Master’s degree from a recognized college or university with a major study in public health, public administration, economics, business, mathematics, computer science, accounting, epidemiology, health statistics, planning or related field.
Experience: Five years’ experience performing health data analysis responsibilities, including duties related to staff development, economic planning, budget analysis, data management or other relevant areas. Each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education at the graduate level only.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Preferred – quantitative and analytic capabilities including knowledge of injury epidemiology, surveillance and research methods, particularly in such areas as statistical theory and techniques, sources of social and economic information, cost benefit analysis and marketing techniques and concepts. Writing skills are also very important. Experienced manager with a demonstrated commitment to the injury field.
