I have been asked by a local detective about publications regarding the
phenomenon of child sexual abuse victims changing (increasing) the amount of
abuse they disclose after the initial (lesser) disclosures. There is a local
court case that he is anticipating a defense attorney attempting to discredit
an adolescent males' disclosures because at the initial disclosure to law
enforcement was significantly less detailed than subsequent interviews
generated.

Clinically and anecdotally I am not surprised that a victim would become more
comfortable with discussing issues, but cannot recall a peer reviewed or
emperically evaluated publication on the topic.
Any help would be appreciated.
This appears to be a natural evolution in the language, with caretaker
seemingly connoting a "taking away from" which sounds anathema to the
generally understood concept. Caregiver is more connecting and nurturing,
and less negative. My first experience with this subtle shift in usage was
not in the child protection arena, but from the grassroots HIV care
community that helped redefine and reframe a number of rather negative
concepts.

Hello -
The subject of Dr. Finkelhor's question prompts me to ask further if anyone
knows of a technical distinction between "caregiver" and "caretaker." Are
the two words interchangeable, or are there contexts in which one is clearly
more appropriate than the other? Also, are there reasons that you consider
one generally preferable to the other in the broad context of CPS?
Thanks,
Chris
