Re: parenting programs for drug users in the prison system
Portia A. Davis,
There is also a program in the women's prison Bedford, NY, founded by Jean
Harris and a nun. Harris was the head mistress (Dean) of an exclusive girls
school, convicted of killing Dr. Herman Tarnower, the Scarsdale Diet Doctor,
in 1980 and sentenced to prison in New York. She wrote about women in prison
based upon her experiences. While in prison, using her skill and knowledge,
Harris set up a mother-infant program and tutored many of the less fortunate
inmates. Her book, Stranger in Two Worlds , is a must read....she tells how
she began the parenting program in the Bedford, NY women's prison and the
community who housed the children so they could attend the program daily with
their mothers in prison.
I also found out that Ms. Harris is currently holding lectures/presentations
on this very project. The project is called Children of Bedford, NY Project.
This was on the internet........"Jean Harris, author and supporter of the
Children of Bedford (N.Y.) Project and a Millersville University
scholar-in-residence, will deliver a lecture/presentation at 8 p.m. Tuesday,
Sept. 19, 2000, in the Science & Technology Building's Armstrong Auditorium
at MU. Former headmistress of the prestigious Madeira School, Harris was
sentenced to 15 years to life in prison after being convicted of the 1980
murder of Dr. Herman Tarnower, a wealthy cardiologist known as the "Scarsdale
Diet Doctor" with whom she had been involved for 14 years."
Hope this helps
